KRAKATAU |
THE EFFEcTS: |
Krakatoa, or Krakatau (Indonesian: Krakatau), is a volcanic island situated in the Sunda Strait between the islands of Java and Sumatra in Indonesia.
Even though no one was killed by the eruption itself, the tsunamis it generated had disastrous results, killing roughly 36,000 people and wiping out a number settlements, including Telok Batong in Sumatra, and Sirik and Semarang in Java. An additional 1,000 or so people died from superheated volcanic ash which literally rushed across the surface of the ocean. There are even documented reports of groups of human skeletons floating across the Indian Ocean on rafts of volcanic pumice and washing up on the east coast of Africa up to a year after the eruption! Creepy eh? ~ |
